Pilates builds core strength, posture and flexibility, and you don’t need a studio or a big machine to start. A mat and a few small tools are enough.
The Basic Pilates Toolkit
- Mat: a thick, cushioned mat (around 10mm) protects your spine and knees during floor work.
- Pilates ring (magic circle): squeeze it between your knees or hands to work inner thighs, chest and arms.
- Mini ball: adds support under your back or a balance challenge.
- Loop and figure-8 bands: add resistance to leg and arm moves.
- Pilates bar (optional): a bar with bands for standing and floor exercises once you’re ready for more.
Targeted Training Pilates Kit
Includes a 14-inch ring, figure-8 bands, a ball and more, with a workout guide.
20-Minute Beginner Routine
- Breathing and pelvic tilts (2 min): lie on your back, knees bent.
- The hundred (2 min): head and shoulders lifted, pump arms while breathing.
- Ring squeeze bridges (3 min): ring between knees, lift and lower hips.
- Single-leg stretch (3 min): alternate pulling one knee in.
- Side-lying leg lifts with band (4 min): 2 minutes per side.
- Ring chest press (2 min): squeeze the ring in front of your chest.
- Spine stretch and cool-down (4 min).

Want a Bar Too?
A pilates bar lets you do squats, rows and presses with band resistance. It’s a good next step once floor work feels easy.

Tips for Beginners
- Move slowly. Pilates is about control, not speed.
- Exhale on the effort part of each move.
- Use a thicker mat to protect your spine and knees.
- Practice 2–3 times a week and you’ll feel the difference in a few weeks.
